At the end of a recent jiu-jitsu class, our coach took a moment to speak to us. Out of about 16 students training that day, three of us had sat out of sparing portion at the end of our session. Instead of shaming us or reprimanding us for not participating and being tough enough, he said that this was a good sign. Our coach explained this is what a healthy training class looks like. We were listening to our bodies, and providing the space for recovery. We were still learning and in fact, sometimes you can learn more by stepping back and watching from the outside, picking up on other’s success and identifying areas for improvement.
This was encouraging to me as it can be incredibly frustrating and demoralizing to not be able to train with the team. What I’ve learned is consistency and showing up is what matters, and you can do this in many ways. The important lesson is to be steadfast in your journey.
Last week, one of the scriptures was Luke 21:19:
By your endurance you will gain your lives.
Through our faith, and commitment to living a god-centered life, we will discover our purpose in life and God’s plan for us.
